FAQ on Google Sheets & Google Finance for Traders

Many of us have used Google Sheets sometime or the other for EOD/RTD data. There are quite a few Screener's out there in the marketplace that are used by retail traders in NSE. One such is the FataFat Stock Screener

There are quite a few things that one can do with Google Sheets and this post seeks to demystify Google Finance for NSE Traders

How do we get EOD/RTD data for NSE by using Google Sheets
Google sheets use a function called GOOGLEFINANCE which is built-in into the google sheets. GOOGLEFINANCE fetches current or historical securities information from Google Finance

How does GOOGLEFINANCE fetch securities information?
GOOGLEFINANCE retrieves data that is stored on Google Servers

Who is the data provider for the data that Google uses?
End of day prices is provided by SIX Financial Information and Intra-day data may be provided by Interactive Data Real-Time Services, Inc.

Does Google Finance provide EOD and RTD(Real Time Data) for all stock exchanges in the world ?
NO. It provides EOD & RTD only for some stock exchanges in the world. This list is increasing gradually and it is expected that in due course Google Finance will provide EOD and RTD for all countries in the world. As an example Google Finance provides EOD and RTD for National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). For Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE), Google Finance provides delayed datafeeds  (15 minutes delay ). For DFM (Dubai Financial Markets), Google Finance does not provide any data. More details on Google Finance Data Listing and Disclaimers

Is the Google Finance Data REALLY Real-Time for NSE stock Exchange?
It is my experience that during periods of volatility, there is a delay of about 4-6 seconds between the data provided by my broker and Google Finance. Google Finance Data retrieved through Google Sheets is not reliable for Intra Day Trading.

So is Google Finance Data reliable at least for EOD data?
NO. Presently, the EOD data is not back-adjusted.

What about Yahoo Finance. I heard that Yahoo provides good quality back-adjusted EOD data?
In June 2017, Yahoo changed their terms and conditions and now they provide adjustments only for Stock Splits. Adjustments for Stock Dividends are not handled anymore.

Is there any work around to get back-adjusted EOD data for use in google sheets?
YES. We can use back-adjusted data procured from a reliable vendor and upload the same to a google sheet. This sheet in turn can be referenced to create strategies for traders.

When there are so many problems why do some retail traders use Google Sheets for Intraday Trading?
Becos it is free and high volatility is not a daily occurrence in the NSE stock market.

Is there any other way that I can retrieve Google Finance Stock Data without using Google Sheets?
Yes. Google provides this data on their servers. Check this Link for TCS . It can be retrieved by developing a simple Python program to Get Real Time Data from Google Finance for NSE. The use of data from Google Servers is subject to the terms and conditions of Google Finance.
